With the completion of the Point Pleasant Canal in 1925, Barnegat Bay Island was born. The water surrounding it includes the Manasquan Inlet, the Manasquan River, the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Barnegat Bay and the Barnegat Inlet.

Technically there are 7 bridges connecting the island to the mainland: Route 35 Bridge over the Manasquan River; the NJ Transit Bridge for the train over the Manasquan River; The Route 88 Bridge and the Loveland Town/Bridge Avenue Bridge over the Point Pleasant canal; the Mantoloking Road Bridge over the Barnegat Bay; and the two Route 37 Bridges over the Barnegat Bay.

The official towns encompassing Barnegat Bay Island include: Point Pleasant Beach; part of Point Pleasant; Bay Head; Mantoloking, part of Brick Township, Lavallette, part of Toms River, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park; and part of Berkeley Township.

Some of the many unincorporated areas are: South Mantoloking; Normandy Beach; Ocean Beach; and Ortley Beach.
